Do you find it difficult to bounce back from a period of stress or illness? Have you put on weight around your abdomen and just can’t lose it? Maybe you have adrenal fatigue…
Adrenal fatigue is well known in natural health circles, but is something that is overlooked by many other health professionals. As the name suggests, it is when the adrenal glands become fatigued and generally occurs after chronic, intense stress, however we can also see it develop after an acute traumatic event and severe infections. People with adrenal fatigue generally look normal, they live normal lives, but there is a feeling of being unwell or under the weather. I generally hear people say “I just know something’s not right”. Despite numerous blood tests and visits to the GP, nothing can be found for this feeling of being unwell.
Most people are aware that the stressors that our bodies face in the 21st century are immense, we feed it food it was never meant to digest and expose it to more chemicals in one day than most of us will have birthdays. We work full time while raising children, keeping a tidy house, a healthy relationship, staying fit and still trying to have a social life. In fact after just writing this list I’m feeling stressed! But what most of us are unaware of is the impact this is having on our bodies, and adrenal fatigue is the first sign of this.
So how do you recognize this “adrenal fatigue”, well it manifests slightly differently for everyone, but the most common signs are:
– Fatigue (surprisingly) that is not relieved by sleep.
– Using stimulants such as caffeine to provide you with energy throughout the day.
– Using alcohol at night to wind down from the caffeine induced high that seems to come on only when you don’t need it.
– Weight gain around the abdomen and difficulty loosing that weight.
– Insomnia with no known cause.
– Difficulty maintaining healthy blood sugar levels.
– Mood swings.
– Recurrent infections.
There is a lot that can be done about Adrenal Fatigue including eating the right foods, moderate exercise, herbal and nutritional medicine, meditation, getting regular massage and taking time out.
